A major goal of the Nicolet Search Team is what we loike to call Preventative SAR (Search & Rescue).  If we can prevent someone from getting lost or give them survival knowledge to help them if they become lost, that saves our Team members a cold wake up, an all night drive and prevents Team Member Sleep Deprivation.

Lost But Found-Safe and Sound

(Hug-A-Tree and Survive Program)    Please Read >>  How it all began - The story of Jimmy Beveridge

This is a program designed for younger children ages 5 up to the early teens.  It consists of a short video (about 11 minutes) and a follow up dicussion of what to do if you ever find yourself lost in the woods.  Simple survival skills are shown in the video and discussed with the kids.  Since the video is directed towards the younger kids, it really does get it's message across and the kids do remember it.   We can tailor the program to be as long as you like, doing a show and tell with Team equipment and how it is used.

Just doing the simple program should not take more than 30 minutes, start to finish.   Our only requirement we would need is the use of a DVD player and a way to show the DVD to the students.

We have done this in the classroom, with Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout & Girl Scout Troops.  Please contact us if you would like to know more or schedule a presentation.

The principles this program teaches to the kids are:
  • Hug a tree once you know you are lost.
  • Always carry a trash bag and whistle on a picnic, hike, or camping trip.
  • My parents won't be angry at me.
  • Make Yourself Big.
  • There are no animals out there that want to hurt you
  • You have hundreds of friends looking for you.

Some things that parents can do:
  • Footprint your child.
  • Try to keep them from getting lost in the first place
  • Admit to yourself when you become lost.
  • Call the Sheriff quickly, if your child is lost.
  • Be available for interviewing.
  • Remember that any personal information will be kept confidential.

Map & Compass - A Practical Application

This is a program that can be designed for children ages 5 up to the early teens from Brunton.  We have a compass training kits of 30 compasses and lesson plans to present the map and compass to youth of all ages.  We can design the program around your schedule and needs.

We have done this in the classroom, with Cub Scout Packs and Boy & Girl Scout Troops.  Please contact us if you would like to know more or schedule a presentation.
